Lesson 7th grade- Throwing and catching of a football
Objectives Identify/describe key elements of mature throwing & catching
Standard NASPE Standard 2.1 (7th grade California State Standards)
Location Classroom and field and/or blacktop
Equipment Reading/viewing material, task-sheets, footballs, pencils
Time Frame (3)-45 min. periods (throwing, catching, written description)
Step 1 is to connect students to their own personal prior knowledge. Connecting to prior knowledge boosts student engagement. Divide class into partners and assign them partner A and partner B. Ask, “who has experience throwing and catching a football”. Allow students to share their experiences with their partners. Then ask the students to determine 3 important factors that contribute to throwing and catching a football correctly. Have the students “Think Pair Share” (TPR). The students will think on their own about the topic and then share and discuss with their partner their findings. Using Equity Cards (cards with students’ names on them), randomly select a card and call on the student to give descriptions of what their partners stated. Step 2 is to show a brief video depicting the aspects that make up the correct throwing and catching motion in regards to throwing a football. When short video is completed, have students TPS (think, pair-share) and then write down 3 aspects for throwing and catching a football that will help them to be successful. Possible aspects/ cues are:
Throwing Motion: Lead foot opposite of throwing hand, non-throwing hand directed toward “target”, correct grip, hip rotation, and follow through.
Catching Motion: Ball arrival above the waist= thumb to thumb and index finger to index finger (creates a triangle). Below the waist arrival of the football= the hands should be positioned pinky finger to pinky finger. Always catch with your hands and bring the ball to your body.
